How to relieve ear pressure during hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment?

You may feel pressure in your ears as the hyperbaric chamber is pressurized (similar to taking off in an airplane). Here are some tips on how to relieve ear discomfort during HBOT:

1. Close your mouth and hold your nose firmly between your fingers and thumb. Blow as if you were blowing your nose, but keep your nose and mouth closed. When this process is done correctly, you will feel the air being expelled from your ears, which should relieve the pressure.

2. Open your mouth as much as possible, even stick out your tongue. This causes the sinus passages around the ears to drain and relieve pressure.

3. You can also massage the area under your ears and behind your chin. If you and your child have ear problems during compression, try the same massage technique to make decompression more comfortable.

4. Yawning, chewing gum, or swallowing: can help balance the pressure in the ears, thereby reducing pain and discomfort.
